How we know Conductor Sam can help

The latest chapter in the Conductor Sam story began on an EC train heading towards Prague from Dresden. I was in the midst of taking videos out of the window to showcase the stunning journey by the River Elbe, when I picked up a message to say that Sam was ready for testing.

How we got there was that I had already taken over 350 journeys with Interrail passes and spent weeks planning each trip. When it was suggested that AI tech could help me and everybody else who purchases Eurail and Interrail passes, I wasn't convinced.

I was on a Czech train travelling through Germany en route to Hungary, I had a first class pass and had gambled on not making a reservation, as it wasn't mandatory. Plenty of seats were available when I boarded, but 2nd class was a total contrast with people having to sit on the floor in the corridor. I had thought 'How would AI ever know what I was experiencing and be able to share that with others'?

I was wrong.

Sam finds answers to questions such as "Should I reserve when using a 2nd class pass on a train from Germany to Prague?", because it has been targeted at the latest, most accurate and most relevant info. Thousands of references and mentions of European train services, stations, routes and rail pass usage are scanned and filtered.

More than a 1000 test questions have been asked and graded, so that Sam now has a better idea of what an excellent answer looks like. The testing has been carried out by someone who has travelled to more than 160 locations with a pass. Behind the scenes resources, such as the current rail pass reservation costs have been put in place to ensure accuracy. Because we know what matters.

Sam passed with a 99.2% score, because despite being perfectionists, we have had to accept that Conductor Sam won't ever quite get to 100%.

Planning a Eurail Trip Shouldn't Require a PhD in Rail Transport

The Problem:
  • • 1 trip to plan, but up to 33 countries = 33 sets of rail travel rules
  • • Each country has an average of 4 express train services = 132 sets of regulations
  • • 132 national reservation terms + 30+ international train services, each with distinct rules
  • 40+ overnight routes with up to 5 accommodation types per train
  • • = more than 120 prices for different types of reservations!
  • 36 day train services with mandatory reservations = 36 services where pass reservations can sell out
  • 25+ services with optional reservations = conflicting advice: Do, don't, should, shouldn't
  • • Plus you need to know which train service is on each route = 1000+ variables
The Solution:

But Conductor Sam knows, so ask it

Conductor Sam combines lived experience, from taking more than 200 different trains with a rail pass, with cutting-edge AI. So you can get answers to the train reservation puzzles and more.

Sam can help with saving money and you can also learn when the extra costs can pay off.

Plus you can discover how to make the most of each journey - the scenery, the on-board facilities, the optimum stations, is going First Class worth it? And much more!

Interrail / Eurail Planning Problems Solved by Sam

Trip Planning Dilemmas

You don't yet need to know the time a train will be leaving on the second Monday of your trip, or the name of that station in Berlin. But you are looking for advice that takes you towards your optimum itinerary. Some personalised ideas and suggestions to suit you.

Step 1

Ask Sam how to take your first journey from your home town, the airport, or ferry terminal.

Step 2

Then ask where you can travel on to most cheaply and easily by including 'with my Interrail pass' or 'with my Eurail pass' in your questions.

Step 3

Begin to finesse your trip: Ask about scenic routes and how to make the most of them, and/or whether you can take a night train, or avoid it.

Plus as you plan, Sam will often throw in suggestions of where to stay and how to make the most of each destination when you arrive!

Knowing the Rules

You could have checked out the Eurail / Interrail website, their support forums, Reddit, multiple social media channels, Seat 61, ShowMeTheJourney, ticket booking services, Wikipedia and on and on. Because you need to know that sometimes you'll have to do X, but on other trains Y applies. It could take you a weekend to get to a place in your head, where you think you know, you've got it right?

Step 1

Just ask Sam instead. It will check out all of those sources and thousands of others where you wouldn't know where to look. Sometimes it will take it more than a minute, but it won't take a weekend!

Step 2

Click on the suggested Follow Up questions to dive deeper.

Seat Reservation Riddles

Your preferences could be, 'Yay, I want the peace of mind of having a guaranteed seat', or 'Additional fees, no way'. But whatever suits you, there's a need to make sense of the inconsistencies, rules and costs around reservations. It's supposed to be a fun trip and not something that prompts a flash back to hours spent studying in the college library.

Step 1

Ask if reservations can be avoided.

Step 2

Check if they're optional, because if the answer is 'yes' it's a money saver!

Step 3

Ask how much?

Step 4

Ask how to book?

All made possible without the need to know whether you'll be taking a Frecciarossa or an InOui train. Because Sam will work it out based on the A to B.

Avoid Obstacles

You have worked where you want to go, so have purchased a rail pass, booked the accommodation and have 'Arrange the reservations' as next on the To Do list. Yikes! They're actually sold out on some optimum trains you want to take! Here's how not to be in this awkward scenario!

Step 1

Ask for its advice on when to spend and book, to ensure you can be on the right train at the best time.

Step 2

Ask how to work around the 'Sorry, sold out' scenarios.

And if you happen to find chaos occurring when you get to a station, Sam can help plan last minute alternative routes and trains.

How much money

The pass costs x per day, so you need to go how far to go, for the balance to tip towards making it worthwhile? Plus there's an additional cost of this train, that train and on and on? So is it cheaper to book tickets? Getting an idea of how to even begin answering those questions, would be so good.

Step 1

Ask the cost of a pass?

Step 2

Ask for the typical price of a journey ticket?

Step 3

Check if the ticket comes with a reservation

Step 4

Ask how much a rail pass reservation will be - for a seat, a bed, a bunk, whatever suits.

Though hands up - Sam isn't a price calculator (yet). It can't add up the price of your pass + the reservations, or come up with a comparative total cost of tickets, but we're working towards that sweet spot - because nothing else can do that either with 100% accuracy. So just for now you'll have to do the math… Soz.

How much time

Not just how long it will take each train to get from here to there - Sam's got that nailed. But pre-Sam, planning an optimum trip took so long that it meant skipping the trip to the beach / gallery / skate park / ball game… Hence Sam can save you time in more ways than one!

And what if it can't?

Like every other AI based service Sam can't ever be 100% perfect.

So if you find yourself ever wondering about what Sam tells you, a real-life rail pass expert can step in. That's because a membership includes access to a rail pass concierge service, managed by that person who has been here, there and everywhere with a rail pass. It won't be as fast, cos' they need to sleep, go out for lunch and ahem do other things Sam can't - but for now, they can still beat AI, if you need them to!
